BUILDING COOLING TOWER REPLACEMENT
The project consisted of removing and replacing four roof top cooling
towers, their piping and the associated electrical/instrumentation
work.
This
would typically be a big crane to D+R and load the roof with the
new piping and then roll back in a month later with a bigger crane
to set the cooling tower units. The challenge came into view when
we realized that the original cooling towers weren’t structurally
safe to rig off the roof in any sort of sizable section. We opted
to demo the towers and piping and store them in the mechanical lofts
below the roof. At night and on weekends, we ran the scrap from
the loft down the freight elevator and out of the building and into
dumpsters.
That
got our roof clear but how would we load the roof with the new 16”
piping without the use of a crane. We designed the entire new piping
systems in sections that would fit into the freight elevator and
loaded the roof in reverse of how it had been cleared.
This
gave us a few weeks to get all of the new piping in place as well
as do the prep work in the panels for the electrical and instrumentation
package.
Our
crews set up the crane on a Friday night and had all of the new
units in place by Sunday afternoon. The piping connections were
made, the instrumentation was put on line and this customer had
badly needed cooling capacity come Monday morning.
