145 Years After Its Founding, Industrial Construction Company Is Going Strong Into the Future

Forbes Magazine Article

Five generations of family leadership at M. Davis & Sons is something CEO Peggy Davis Del Fabbro, the great-great granddaughter of founder Edward R. Davis, is very proud of. She is quick to credit the company’s overall success to the strength and talent of her employees, however. She says they are the true source of M. Davis’ innovation and growth. “We expect a lot of our employees, but we also let them know how much we care,” says Del Fabbro. “We invest in their training and safety, and as a result they care about their work in the field, and they care about each other. That shows in the quality of work we are known for.”

Founded in 1870 as a tinsmith shop, M. Davis today is a full-service industrial construction company, providing design and build, fabrication, engineering and maintenance for national and international clients in industries that include oil and gas, chemical, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical. Last year, the company earned $53 million in revenue, and Del Fabbro received the Women’s Business Enterprise Star Award, honoring exemplary women business leaders, from the WBE National Council.

Innovating for Modern Manufacturing Needs
During Del Fabbro’s six-year tenure as CEO, the company has added numerous technological advances including orbital welding, plasma cutting and computerized pipe cutting. She has grown the company to more than 300 employees who are skilled in pipefitting, millwrighting, rigging, electrical, welding, and instrumentation and controls. “Throughout our long history, we have earned an excellent reputation for quality and integrity,” she says. “In the 21st century we have the capability to handle all the demands of modern manufacturing.”

The company has a fulltime, in-house safety department that performs job-site audits and continually keeps employees up-to-date in the latest safety initiatives. M. Davis has received two prestigious safety honors for the past three years: the DuPont Contractor Safety Excellence Award and the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. STEP (Safety Training and Evaluation Process) Platinum level safety award.

Although her company has grown to become an industry leader and international success, Del Fabbro says she never forgets her roots. She stays true to the “family company” values she learned growing up in the business. “We don’t forget where we came from,” Del Fabbro says. “I like to keep that family-business atmosphere where I know everyone by name. That’s what makes us nimble enough to handle a $1,000 job and big enough to handle a $17 million job.”

“It’s rare to have a company survive five generations. I don’t take our success for granted.”

M. Davis & Sons, Inc. Celebrates 145 Years in Business

Uncategorized

Wilmington, DE, April 28, 2015 – M. Davis, the fifth generation woman-owned Industrial Contractor and Fabricator headquartered in Wilmington, DE celebrates 145 years in business. The anniversary marks a high point in the rich family history at M. Davis which has served as an employer to many Delaware residents as well as the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. With $53 million in sales in 2014, and the addition of a new modular skid fabrication shop in Newark, DE, M. Davis is positioning itself to not only sustain employees in the Delaware area but also grow its book of business. “More than ever, M. Davis is readying itself to contribute to the Delaware economy by the acquisition of the new modular skid fabrication facility in Newark,” says M. Davis CEO Peggy Del Fabbro. She is the daughter of Charles Davis who is the former president and still active Chairman of M. Davis. Peggy became an owner in 1998 and in 2009 made the decision to get M. Davis & Sons, Inc. certified as a Woman Owned Business by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) in order to help set her company apart from other contractors by making diversity contracts available for award. Charles Davis recently stated “I’m proud of how Peggy has taken charge of the business and continues the family tradition.” What sets M. Davis apart from the competition is its people. M. Davis has a complex mix of talent in the trades ranging from welders to electricians to boiler technicians. To add to the complexity of the company is the markets it serves from pharmaceutical to oil and gas, from food and beverage plants to energy sites. Many in-house systems are in place to keep the well-oiled machine of M. Davis running smoothly. Training and mentoring is made readily available to less experienced crews. Welding classes held weekly in their shop help bolster certification in this trade. Additionally M. Davis helps employees to earn credentials through classes with National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) which is the construction industry’s standard for training and credentialing in craft areas. M. Davis also helps employees complete apprenticeship programs by sponsoring the costs during their employment. This is the culture that attracts and retains talented people and is an important reason for the strong financial performance, despite the tough economy. From its beginnings as a tinsmith shop in the 1800’s located in the Forty Acres neighborhood of Wilmington to its current status as one of the larger local businesses still located in Wilmington, M. Davis is readying itself to be here for another 145 years.
