Who is M. Davis & Sons and what do you do?
We are a $50 million, fifth generation, woman-owned industrial construction company that builds, installs and maintains corporate plants and facilities for national and international companies, with expertise in mechanical, electrical, boilers, fabrication and instrumentation services.
What services do you provide?
We do welding, plumbing, pipefitting, millwrighting, rigging, boiler maintenance, electrical, and instrumentation and controls. We have in-house fabrication facilities for working with ferrous and non-ferrous metals and modular skids. Our ASME Code Shop offers design, testing, welding and inspection for customers that require an exacting level of workmanship.
What kind of projects do you handle?
M. Davis is small enough to handle a $1,000 job and large enough to handle a $17 million job. Working across industries, we are credentialed and committed to upholding the safety and construction standards from the dirtiest water treatment plant to the most pristine pharmaceutical lab.
What vertical markets do you serve?
We work with the pharmaceutical, oil and gas, energy, food and beverage and chemical industries. Our clients are Fortune 500 companies and government entities.
Where are you located?
We are headquartered in Wilmington, Del., with a satellite office in White Marsh, Md. Our three fabrication facilities are also located in Wilmington and Newark, Del. We have worked on projects locally, nationally and our products have been shipped around the world to locations such as Africa, New Zealand, Russia and Brazil.

M. Davis & Sons is a full service mechanical and electrical contractor offering custom solutions broken into four distinct areas:
- Mechanical services, which include the installation of process equipment, pipefitting, certified welding, rigging and boiler maintenance.
- Electrical services, including total electrical upgrades, troubleshooting, motor control centers and installations in hazardous environments;
- Fabrication Shops, three separate full-service shops
- Tyler Way: fabrication shop for the design and fabrication of process skids;
- Hadco Road fabrication shop for ASME code vessels, structural steel and sheet metal products
- B&O Lane fabrication shop devoted to non-ferrous metals fabrication.
- Controls and Automation, offering system integration with complete concept to design capabilities, PLC/HMI programming, SCADA and wireless communications, and the fabrication of UL listed control panels.
In continuous operation for more than 145 years, M. Davis & Sons began as a tiny tinsmith shop and today maintains facilities for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. M. Biographies of Key Personnel
Peggy began her career at M. Davis in 1987 in the accounting department. She has held various titles within the company such as controller and treasurer and has served on the firm’s executive committee for more than 20 years.
Peggy assumed leadership as CEO in 2008 and works to distinguish M. Davis in the marketplace through an unwavering commitment to safety and quality. Her precise vision of M. Davis and the superior workmanship her team provides has enabled the company to persevere during recent economically trying times.
A graduate of University of Delaware with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, Peggy is an active member of the alumni association. Peggy promotes diversity by participating in a wide variety of roles in support of WBENC, including the “Envoy” program. She also served as local past chapter treasurer for the National Association of Women in Construction.
As a socially concerned business leader, Peggy supports various community needs with donations to organizations such as local schools and fire companies, DFRC, and ISPE Toys for Tots annual drive to name a few. She personally participates in many charitable events such as the Dogfish Dash 5K benefiting the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.
Charles Davis has been with M. Davis & Sons, Inc. since 1954 in various capacities before taking over as President in 1974. He has served as Chairman of the Board since 1992. As Chairman, Mr. Davis has a broad range of field and managerial knowledge related to the construction industry. Charles served as company president from 1974 until 1992. Prior to that he practiced the various trades including sheet metal, welding, pipefitting, millwrighting, electrical.
Charles Davis attended A. I. DuPont High School and has attended classes at Delaware Technical and Community College, as well as various business seminars through FMI.
Charles formerly was affiliated with American Welding Society and the Associated Builders and Contractors of Delaware where he still maintains relationships with the leaders there.
John Gooden has more than 25 years of experience in the contracting and construction industry. He is responsible for overseeing the safety and human resources departments and all employee development. He is also responsible for employee relations for more than 330 employees, and interaction with union representatives. John is also a point person on contract negotiations for our company. John is also a point person on our corporate relationships with the local vocational schools and helps with programs, tours of our shops, and helping on career days at the schools in DE, MD and NJ.
In his previous position as senior project manager and then as vice president from 2002 to 2016, John developed and maintained all aspects of industrial contracts in chemical plants, with a heavy concentration on turn-key solutions. His group managed bidding, fabrication and installation, employee issues and cost accounting for maintenance and construction projects.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware in 1988 via an ROTC scholarship and continued to serve the armed forces with the United States Army Reserves until 1996. John completed the AMA Financial Management Series, Executive Education Programs from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and he earned his CRT WAM. Recently, John Gooden was awarded the Associated Builders and Contractors “Outstanding Contribution by an Individual” which recognized John’s work in field training, career and technical education.
John Bonk has more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry, starting in 1978 with his first position at M. Davis & Sons, Inc. as a project engineer. He worked his way up through the ranks to then become a project manager, executive vice president and then president in 1998. Most recently, John Bonk has passed the reigns of president to John Gooden, so that he can focus more on the day to day field operations.
John Bonk continues to serve M. Davis as a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the strategic planning of the company. John is a seasoned business executive whose knowledge and experience continues to bring value to the company.
Eric Koelsch brings more than 20 years of experience to the electrical area of M. Davis & Sons. Eric began his career as a project manager and has developed his electrical staff into a profitable business unit. Eric was promoted to vice president in 2009.
A member of the executive committee, Eric crosses over multiple business platforms to work with the many different talents and capabilities within the company. He investigates and targets new business ventures, effectively leveraging all of the company’s competencies. Eric is also a point person for an employee mentoring program at M. Davis.
With a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University, Eric previously managed a team of project managers to oversee the electrical department. The team creates and maintains quality systems that are presented on each job. Eric holds and maintains the Master Electrician Licenses in multiple states for M. Davis. He is responsible for state and county electrical inspections and permits.
A leader in the M. Davis Accounting Team for more than 16 years and part of the Executive Management Team for the last 3 years, Gilmartin previously held the titles of Assistant Controller, Controller and Treasurer at M. Davis. Prior to that, he was an auditor with Belfint, Lyons & Shuman.

Mike Gilmartin is an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association where he previously held the position of chapter president for Delaware.
Along with his BS in Accounting, he has attended strategic courses at Wharton, project management training through Associated Builders and Contractors and leadership training through the CFMA. Mike Gilmartin will continue to lead and mentor the accounting team at M. Davis as well as head the decision making for the company’s financial management and planning.
