R&D Building, Chilled Water Upgrades Project Phase – 2

PROBLEM OR TASK:

To complete “Phase 2” of a seven phase chilled water upgrade project located in the fourth floor mechanical penthouse of a fully functioning research and development facility without interrupting the normal day to day operations of the buildings.

Complete Phase 2 of a seven phase chilled water upgrade project located in the fourth floor mechanical penthouse of a fully functioning research and development facility without interrupting the normal day to day operations of the buildings. There were also rigging and demolition issues associated with field removal, modifications, and installation of structural steel.

OUR SOLUTION OR DESCRIPTION OF WHAT WE DID:

MDavis fabricated and installed:

New structural steel to replace the existing steel in order to accommodate the new cooling towers and associated piping.
A new central chilled water pumping station and a new tower water distribution system each with 24 inch supply and return headers and 150 and 250 hp pumps.
Three 1500 ton cooling towers.
Tie-ins of new to existing piping systems.

UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF OUR WORK:

This project was completed during the winter months (November through March) in an effort to minimize the demands on the chilled water systems. This compressed time frame, combined with the fact that the building was operational during the project, meant that elaborate scheduling and coordination was crucial to the success of the project.
