Supplier Diversity
Diversity and inclusion are personal at M. Davis & Sons, a fifth-generation, woman-owned, global industrial construction and manufacturing supplier for major multinational corporations, regional business leaders, and government agencies. Our CEO, Peggy Del Fabbro, is the first woman to lead her family’s business, taking over from her father in 2008. Peggy is actively engaged in promoting her role as a woman in a male-dominated business, and in mentoring others to change the status quo. She is committed to paying forward her successes and the encouragement she received by supporting and fueling success for other women entrepreneurs and those underrepresented in business and the workforce – and she instills this in M. Davis’s leadership, our culture, and our business operations.
Peggy is an active member of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and served as local past chapter treasurer for the National Association of Women in Construction.
With our long history in Delaware and a commitment to economic and workforce development, Peggy and M. Davis make it part of our mission to fuel the pipeline of skilled tradespeople and engineers in our home state and those surrounding states where we do business. We support and are heavily invested in vocational education, mentoring, and workforce development in Delaware. We work closely with the State of Delaware Apprenticeship program and have the highest enrollment of apprentices. Our leadership and employees are committed to making apprenticeship – and high-paying, long-term employment – more accessible to students of all genders, races, and backgrounds. We recognize that we have a unique opportunity to engage women and minorities in an industry traditionally known to be lacking in diversity.
M. Davis provides equal employment opportunities for all persons, regardless of disability, ancestry, race, religion, color, sex, national origin, or age as a fundamental policy. This is supplemented with an Action Plan committed to providing employment opportunities for minorities, women, people with disabilities, and veterans. Our commitment to diversity in “employment practices include (but are not limited to) recruiting, recruitment advertising, hiring, transfer, promotions, training, compensation, benefits, layoffs, demotions, and terminations.” Our policy works to ensure an environment free of harassment or intimidation at its work sites and facilities. We ensure that all on-site supervisory personnel are aware of and implement their obligation to maintain such an environment. All complaints of alleged discrimination are taken very seriously, investigated, and dealt with in a timely manner, with appropriate corrective actions taken. Our recruitment efforts are centered on outreach to local, minority, and women’s organizations, schools, and training organizations with significant minority and female enrollment.
We are especially proud of M. Davis’s partnership with the East Side Rising Career Development Center in Wilmington, Delaware. The program creates jobs for the underserved in our community and underrepresented in our industry. We mentor, train, and support the growth of unskilled workers, offering meaningful starting opportunities and potential for advancement through company-sponsored training for long-term, consistent, well-paying jobs.
M. Davis established our formal supplier diversity program in 2014 to support healthy competition and a level playing field for all potential and existing suppliers in our supply chain. We regularly participate in supplier diversity networking opportunities, encourage solicitation from, and track our suppliers in categories of small, minority, women, and veteran owned. Since the program has been in place, we have averaged 13% of total spend with small and diverse suppliers.
M. Davis is committed to leveraging our successes, influence, and relationships to further our positive impact in diversity and inclusion.
Celebrating a Decade of Inclusion: Our Supplier Diversity Program’s 10th Anniversary
Ten years ago, M. Davis & Sons, Inc. embarked on a journey to transform its supply chain by fostering inclusion and diversity by launching a Supplier Diversity Program. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we reflect on the achievements and impacts this program has had on our business, our suppliers, and our community.
The Birth of a Vision
Our CEO, Peggy Del Fabbro, drove the inception of the Supplier Diversity Program to level the playing field for all suppliers, regardless of size, background, or location. We recognized the immense potential and innovation that diverse suppliers bring. By integrating businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underrepresented groups into our supply chain, we aimed to build a more inclusive, equitable, and competitive marketplace.
The Road to Success
Over the past decade, our Supplier Diversity Program has made significant strides:
1. Expanded Supplier Base: We have successfully onboarded over 100 small and diverse suppliers, contributing to a more resilient and innovative supply chain. These suppliers have brought fresh perspectives and solutions, helping us stay competitive in an ever-evolving market.
2. Economic Impact: By diversifying our supply chain, we have not only contributed to economic growth within underrepresented communities but also fostered a sense of pride and connection. Our partnerships have enabled diverse businesses to expand, create jobs, and stimulate local economies.
3. Innovation and Quality: Diverse suppliers have introduced new ideas and technologies and significantly enhanced the quality of our products and services. Their unique insights and approaches have driven innovation, improved quality, and ultimately, reassured our customers and stakeholders of our commitment to excellence.
4. Growth: Partnering with other small and diverse businesses has allowed us to take on larger projects and expand our customer base.
